Your Smart TV is the best screen in your home, but default settings often leave streaming quality well below its potential. Whether you're seeing washed-out colours, juddering motion, or unnecessary buffering, these steps will unlock the picture quality your TV is capable of delivering.
Smart TVs with built-in apps don't need an external device, but if you're using a streaming stick or box, the HDMI port you plug into matters. For 4K HDR content, you need HDMI 2.0 or higher. Most modern TVs label their 4K-capable ports — look for 'HDMI 2.0', '4K', or 'ARC/eARC' markings. Plug your Fire TV Stick 4K or Android TV box into one of these ports.
If you're using a cable longer than 3 metres, invest in an active HDMI 2.0 cable — passive cables over that length can lose signal integrity and cause picture quality issues at 4K resolutions.
The single biggest improvement most viewers can make is switching away from the 'Vivid' or 'Dynamic' picture mode. These modes are designed to look impressive in bright showroom environments, but at home they oversaturate colours, raise contrast, and add processing that obscures fine detail. Switch to 'Cinema', 'Movie', 'Filmmaker Mode', or 'ISF Calibrated' — names vary by brand.
Filmmaker Mode (available on LG, Samsung, Vizio, and many others) is specifically designed for streaming and on-demand content. It disables motion smoothing, preserves the director's intended colour grade, and targets a calibrated brightness level. If your TV offers it, it's the best choice for films and premium series.
Motion smoothing — called TruMotion on LG, Motion Rate on Samsung, MotionFlow on Sony — artificially increases the apparent frame rate of 24 fps cinema content to 60 or 120 fps. The result is that films look like they were shot on a video camera rather than in a cinema: smooth, flat, and uncinematic. This is sometimes called the 'soap opera effect'.
For streaming films and scripted series, disable motion smoothing entirely. For live sports, a moderate motion smoothing setting reduces blur during fast action. Most TVs allow you to save separate picture settings per input, so you can have motion smoothing off for your streaming input and on for your live TV input.
Wi-Fi works well for streaming, but a wired Ethernet connection to your Smart TV or streaming device eliminates the main source of variable quality: wireless interference. If your TV has an Ethernet port, run a Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable directly to your router for the most stable connection. Smart TVs with Ethernet ports are most common in premium models.
If Ethernet isn't practical, connect your TV to the 5 GHz band of your Wi-Fi router rather than 2.4 GHz. The 5 GHz band is faster and less congested, though it has a shorter range. Place your router on the same floor as your TV and avoid metal obstacles between them.
Inside the Ultra 8K app (or any streaming app), find the video quality settings. The default is usually 'Automatic', which uses adaptive bitrate to serve the best quality your connection supports. If you have a consistently fast connection (25 Mbps or more), setting quality to 'Ultra HD' manually ensures you always receive the highest available stream without any adaptive quality steps.
Check that HDR is enabled in the app settings if your TV supports it. On some Smart TV apps, HDR is delivered automatically, but on others it requires an explicit toggle.
With the right HDMI port, picture mode, motion settings, and connection, your Smart TV will deliver streaming quality that rivals a cinema. The combination of Ultra HD and HDR on a well-calibrated display transforms streaming from background entertainment into a genuine visual experience.
