High Dynamic Range (HDR) is one of the most meaningful quality improvements in streaming technology — arguably more impactful than the jump from 1080p to 4K for most viewers. Yet it's also one of the most misunderstood. This guide explains what HDR actually is, how it works in practice, and how to get HDR streaming working on your setup.
Dynamic range in video refers to the ratio between the brightest highlight and the darkest shadow a display can show simultaneously. Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) — the baseline used in virtually all television and streaming for decades — targets a peak brightness of around 100 nits (a unit of brightness) and a colour space called Rec. 709.
In the real world, sunlit outdoor scenes are thousands of times brighter than indoor shadows. SDR compresses this range into a window the display can handle — but the compression inevitably clips highlights (making them grey instead of white) and crushes shadows (making them flat and detail-free). The result is that films and sports look noticeably different from the way the human eye perceives the same scenes in person.
HDR allows displays to show a much wider range of brightness — typically 400 to 2,000 nits for consumer displays, with mastered peak brightness of up to 10,000 nits for professional content. Combined with a wider colour gamut (Rec. 2020, which covers the majority of colours the human eye can perceive), HDR content renders fire that glows, sunsets with gradated colours, and deep shadows with visible detail — all simultaneously.
The practical result is that HDR content looks more three-dimensional and real. Specular highlights — the glint of light on water, a reflection in a window, the rim of a light source — have visible structure rather than being washed out. Dark scenes retain shadow detail without the overall image becoming too bright.
HDR10 is the baseline HDR standard, used by virtually all HDR content. It stores static HDR metadata — a single set of brightness and colour values applied to the entire film. HDR10 is supported by all HDR TVs and streaming devices.
Dolby Vision extends HDR10 with dynamic metadata — scene-by-scene (and sometimes frame-by-frame) brightness and colour calibration that allows the display to render each scene optimally. Dolby Vision delivers visibly better results, particularly in scenes that transition between very bright and very dark. It requires Dolby Vision certification from both the display and the source device. HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) is primarily used for live broadcast HDR and is supported by most HDR TVs for live streaming scenarios.
Not all TVs labelled 'HDR compatible' deliver a genuine HDR experience. TVs rated below 400 nits of peak brightness technically qualify for HDR certification but lack the dynamic range to show the full benefit. Look for TVs with at least 600 nits (good) or 1,000+ nits (excellent) peak brightness for a noticeable HDR improvement.
OLED TVs handle HDR differently: instead of needing high peak brightness, they achieve infinite contrast by turning individual pixels off completely for black, making HDR scenes with dark backgrounds and bright highlights particularly striking. QLED and Mini-LED TVs use local dimming to approximate OLED's contrast in a higher-brightness panel — good choices for bright rooms.
In most cases, HDR activates automatically when you play HDR content on a compatible device and display. Check your TV's picture settings during playback — there should be an HDR indicator in the status bar or picture information menu. If HDR isn't activating, check that your HDMI cable supports HDR (HDMI 2.0 or 2.1), that HDR is enabled in your TV's HDMI settings for that specific port, and that your streaming device's output settings have HDR enabled.
